Linksys WRT1900AC: Last-generation router with the WRT54GL design

Linksys surprised everyone at the CES 2014 in Las Vegas. Their newest router, once again under the WRT series, is very similar to the well-known Linksys WRT54GL, the best of its time. This new model is the Linksys WRT1900AC and it will undoubtedly set the bar even higher.

The Linksys WRT1900AC is a dual-band router compatible with the 802.11a/b/g/n/ac standards and offers four external MIMO 4T4R antennas you can unmount and replace for better ones. Even though it features four MIMO 4T4T antennas, it’s actually a Three-Stream, capable of offering speeds of up to 600Mbps in the 2.4GHz band in Wi-Fi N and up to 1300Mbps in the 5GHz band if you use the Wi-Fi AC standard. The extra antenna improves the performance of the device, giving it an edge over the current MIMO 3T3R routers.

It also has a USB 3.0 as well as one USB 2.0 port that can also be used as eSATA ports. A router with an eSATA port? That seems to be the case, as you can see in the following pictures:

The firmware it features is the same as the latest routers from the company, the well-known Linksys Smart Wi-Fi, though you can also install the classic Linksys one. However, the company said they’re planning on releasing an OpenWRT-based firmware and giving the SDK to the developers as soon as possible.

This is huge news, as Linksys will provide the drivers to the manufacturers and developers of Tomato, DD-WRT and OpenWRT so they can make the most out of this new formidable router.

This device will be available during the first trimester of 2014 for around 300$
