FRITZ! Box 7490: The new flagship with Wi-Fi AC, Gigabit, USB 3.0 and DECT for VoIP

AVM has presented the new FRITZ!Box 7490, a high-end router that will replace the FRITZ!Box 7390, which offered great results during our tests. This router is compatible with ADSL and VDSL lines thanks to its integrated modem and you can also use it as a neutral router by configuring its LAN1 and Internet WAN. It is also compatible with the 802.1q VLAN Tagging protocol, especially useful for optic fiber connections.

The design of the FRITZ!Box 7490 is very similar to previous models: it’s available in red and it’s compatible with pretty much any network and standard.

Wireless Wi-Fi capabilities

This router features the latest Wi-Fi AC dual-band technology, capable of reaching speeds of up to 450Mbps in the 2.4GHz band thanks to the Three-Stream technology and MIMO 3T3R with three internal antennas. In the 5GHz band we can get speeds of up to 450Mbps with Wi-Fi N adapters thanks to the Three-Stream and MIMO 3T3R configuration with three antennas dedicated for this band. If you use Wi-Fi AC you can get speeds of up to 1300 Mbps. This means this router can be classified as a AC1750; if you don’t know what this means, we recommend you to read this: Router Classifications.

Wired and USB capabilities

The router features four Gigabit Ethernet ports for the LAN, although you can use the LAN1 as Internet WAN. We believe this hardware features hardware NAT, since according to AVM it features high performance in routing.

It also has two USB 3.0 ports that can be used by USB 2.0 devices. You can get high transfer rates with these ports when you share your hard drives or printers through the router USB 3.0 ports, as long as your computer can handle these speeds, which is a common issue in this regard.

As for the firmware, is has FTP server, Samba, DLNA media server with FRITZ!Nas to access your files anywhere and anytime.

FRITZ! Box 7490

With this router you can make high-quality HD calls if you have a phone that supports this feature. It has a DECT base para to connect up to 6 compatible phones and configure them so they send every call to the router, this way you can make VoIP calls if you have this service.

Other features

This device is also compatible with Smart Home devices like the FRITZ!DECT 200, which we have reviewed. It also includes WOL through the Internet and you can make calls through your smartphone, create guest Wi-Fi networks in both bands and many more thanks to the FRITZ!OS firmware.
