Home is where is

In computing, the localhost is the computer against which you are sitting. Literally it means "this computer". The IP refers to the localhost, as a host is any computer or server, so the local host is the one you are using. is the address that points to your PC, from your PC, and is called the Loopback IP address. Loopback refers to data flow routing.

It is a mechanism that the host uses to access its own network services, regardless of network configuration. The loopback can be useful for many things, such as accessing a web service that is installed on the machine itself, by just using the address that points to the same computer.

We can say that IP address is your house, directing your home from home, if that makes any sense.

8 tips to maximize the security and signal quality of our router

In this article by the wirelessrouterhome team, we want to give advice that may prove very useful to you. This article has some small pieces of advice to improve the security and quality of our WiFi network and to accurately configure our router. For this article we’ve used as a reference the Asus RT-AC66U router on a computer with the Windows 7 Professional 32-bit operating system. Before we begin, we should note that the IP addresses and passwords used here are just as generic as they may be false. We mention this to avoid any possible suspicions. Let’s begin.

The first step is to access our router. In our case we’ll open a web browser and put (a totally generic URL) in the address bar. Once we’ve done that, it’ll ask us for a username and password, which in this case is "ADMIN" for both fields. If we don’t know the IP address, we’ll do the following: we’ll go to the home screen and write CMD. Once a terminal window has opened we write "ipconfig" in lowercase and without quotes. Once it’s done loading all the information we should look at where it says “Default Gateway” there to the side is where our IP address for entrance to the router is. Once we put the aforementioned username and password we’ll access the configuration menu of our router ASUS RT-AC66U.

Once we’ve accessed our router the first thing to do is change the username and password. To do this, go to "Administration" and then "System," where it shows clearly where to change both.


The next step is to change the SSID. This is the name of our network that we see when looking for Wi-Fi on a Wireless device (a smartphone, for example). Generally, manufacturers give the network a generic name, which is usually the model of the router. To change it, go to "General" tab of the "Wireless" section, which lists the SSID as ASUS (a generic name). Replace it with the name you want to give your network. In our case, we’ve used our own name, "wirelessrouterhome."

D-Link, the leader of Wi-Fi AC devices

D-Link led the Wi-Fi AC router market AC in the third quarter of 2013, according to a report about Wi-Fi equipment by the renowned organization ABI Research. This study shows that D-Link controlled 12.7% of the global market during the third quarter of 2013.


We should note that this study covers the market of Wireless LAN (WLAN) equipment sold to consumers and businesses. This market reached 139.1 million units sold in 2013.

It’s important to note that Wireless N devices still occupy the largest market share of Wi-Fi devices sold last year, although analysts at ABI Research predict that the number will gradually decrease in favor of AC Wireless devices.

What is WiFi 802.11ac and what makes it so fast?

The new 802.11ac WiFi standard aims to give greater speed to your wireless network. Here is how it works and what are its advantages, and some compatible devices and, of course, if it really delivers what it promises.

The WLAN standards regulate the speed and type of data transmission by radio waves. Currently, the standard n (802.11n) is the most common, with speeds ranging from 150 to 600 Mbps. The new technology ac (802.11ac) increases the theoretical speed to 1300 Mbps.

However, the speed attainable in practice is significantly less.

What other advantages offers this standard?

The components used in the standard ac consume less power, which is good for battery-operated devices such as laptops, mobile phones and tablets.

D-Link DAP-3310: Outdoor Access Point with Wireless N and PoE

D-Link has released a new Wi-Fi N access point geared specifically for outdoor use. The new model is known as D-Link DAP-3310 and its main feature is its particular performance/cost ratio and multiple configuration modes.

This new access point features a 10dBi high-gain antenna with Wi-Fi N and incorporates a second antenna (although we do not know its gain) to achieve speeds of up to 300Mbps in the 2.4GHz band. Thanks to this high-gain antenna, it can get long-distance connections with good signal quality. It is also compatible with the 802.11b/g standard.

Tamosoft Throughput Test: Test the performance of your Wi-Fi and wired networks

We always use Iperf or JPerf for our tests, as this tool offers many configuration options, is totally free and available for any operative system. Today we will present you Tamosoft Throughput Test, a similar tool capable of configuring a QoS from the client’s perspective.

This program is also free, but it’s only available for Windows and compatible with the following versions of Microsoft’s OS:

  • Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8: 32 and 64 bits
  • Windows Server 2003, 2008, 2012: 32 and 64 bits

The tool is only 4MB; once you install it, you’ll see the menu for the client and the server. It’s very intuitive, as soon as you press START in the server menu, you’ll be asked for an IP of the client. Then simply input the IP (and the port, if you changed the default one).

The most interesting feature about this program is that it allows you to classify the traffic through a QoS in the Client menu. You can choose between “Best Effort” or, for example, preset configurations for audio and video streaming.
